Cost of ground transportation for Canadian shippers up 0.83% in May

Results published by the Canadian General Freight Index (CGFI) indicate that the total cost of ground transportation for Canadian shippers increased by 0.83% in May, as compared with April.

The Base Rate Index, which excludes the impact of Accessorial Charges assessed by carriers, increased by 1.78% in May.

Average fuel surcharges assessed by carriers decreased in May. Fuel was 24.16% of base rates in May versus 24.98% in April. Last year in May, the average fuel surcharge was 25.07%.

"Total Freight Costs increased by 0.83% in May. Total Domestic LTL and Truckload declined in May while Total Cross Border LTL and Truckload increased. Year over year, Total Domestic LTL and Total Cross Border LTL are above last year while, Total Domestic Truckload, Total Cross Border TL segments remain below the costs for the same period last year," said Doug Payne, President of CGFI sponsor Nulogx.
