Canadian government demands end to major railways lockouts and orders arbitration

August 23, 2024

Canada's Minister of Labour, Steven MacKinnon, announced that he has asked the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) to impose binding arbitration in the labour contract dispute between the Canadian National Railway Co., (CN) and Canadian Pacific Kansas City Ltd.,(CPKC) and the Teamsters union.

The two railways, who had locked out their 9,300 workers shortly after midnight Thursday, issued statements saying they were preparing to restart operations following Mr. MacKinnon's announcement. CN announced it initiated its recovery plan. However, disagreements between CPKC and the Teamsters union seems to be slowing the resumption of operations a CPKC and the two sides are negotiating a solution with the CIRB.

It could take a while for full service to resume at both railways.
