Statistics Canada announced that the volume of cargo carried by Canadian railways totalled 30.2 million tonnes in June, up 4.9% from June 2023. Higher shipments of iron ores, canola, potash and other cereal grains were the main contributors to this third straight month of year-over-year growth.

Non-intermodal freight loadings (mainly commodities) in Canada accounted for the overall increase in June, rising by 6.9% year over year to 23.8 million tonnes, the third month of increase.

Intermodal shipments-mainly containers-originating in Canada declined for the first time after four months of increases. Tonnage was down 1.1% year over year to 2.9 million tonnes but remained just below the five-year average of 3.0 million tonnes for June.

Freight loadings from connections with American railways also posted a year-over-year decrease after four months of increases, decreasing 2.4% from June 2023 to 3.5 million tonnes in June 2024.
