Union issues strike notice at Port of Montreal Viau and Maisonneuve terminals

October 31, 2024

A new strike notice was filed yesterday by the Longshoremen's Union CUPE, Local 375, providing for an unlimited strike affecting the two container terminals operated by Termont, the Viau and Maisonneuve terminals.

As of Thursday, October 31 at 11 a.m., these two terminals will be closed until further notice. Access will be prohibited, and no rail, truck or ship services will be provided.

All other Port of Montreal terminals will remain in service:
- Bickerdike, Cast, Racine and CanEst container terminals
- Logistec dry bulk terminals (Montreal and Contrecoeur)
- Liquid bulk terminals
- Grain terminal (Viterra)

Given the impasse, the Maritime Employers Association (MEA) is asking the Minister of Labour and Seniors, Mr. Steven MacKinnon, to appoint the special mediator to reach an agreement by December 3, 2024.

The Montreal Port Authority is concerned about the impact of pressure tactics on the logistics chain and on the supply of goods and commodities for businesses and the public.
