August was a strong month for the Port of New York and New Jersey, ending with a nearly 20 percent jump in total volume from the previous year. A total of 790,891 TEUs (431,782 containers) moved through the port in August compared to 662,740 TEUs (366,339 containers) in 2023. This 19.3 percent increase brings our year-through August total to 5,807,559 TEUs (3,208,864 containers) and marked the sixth consecutive month in which the port surpassed 700,000 TEUs handled.
Imports were up 13.4 percent in August, totaling 395,687 TEUs (216,946 containers) versus 348,921 TEUs (192,889 containers) in August 2023. From January through August, imported loads at the Port of New York and New Jersey reached 2,975,954 TEUs (1,648,153 containers), a 13.6 percent increase from the 2,618,556 TEUs (1,455,034 containers) recorded in the same period of 2023.
A total of 116,628 TEUs (62,771 containers) were exported in August, an increase of 10 percent from the 106,025 TEUs (57,230 containers) recorded in August 2023. From January through August, exported loads at the Port of New York and New Jersey reached 912,367 TEUs (489,866 containers) compared to 857,552 TEUs (463,834 containers) in the same period of 2023, a 6.4 percent increase.
Export empties rose 34 percent in August, totaling 276,222 TEUs compared to 206,064 TEUs in August 2023. A total of 1,901,796 export empties were recorded from January through August, a 16 percent increase from the 1,638,833 TEUs posted in the same period of 2023. Import empties were up 28 percent in January through August versus the previous year.
Rail volume inched up 1 percent from August 2023's figure, totaling 57,053 containers. Rail volume from January through August was 4 percent greater than the same period of the prior year.
Autos moved through the Port of New York and New Jersey totaled 33,466 in August, an increase of 3.1 percent compared to August 2023. From January through August, auto volume was 7.9 percent higher than in the same period of 2023.
