American railroads' combined freight traffic up 11.2 percent in first week of April

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) today reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending April 5, 2025. Total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 500,584 carloads and intermodal units, up 11.2 percent compared with the same week last year.

Total carloads for the week ending April 5 were 226,790 carloads, up 8.5 percent compared with the same week in 2024, while U.S. weekly intermodal volume was 273,794 containers and trailers, up 13.6 percent compared to 2024.

Seven of the 10 carload commodity groups posted an increase compared with the same week in 2024. They included coal, up 11,641 carloads, to 58,314; nonmetallic minerals, up 2,212 carloads, to 31,753; and chemicals, up 1,518 carloads, to 33,423. Commodity groups that posted decreases compared with the same week in 2024 were petroleum and petroleum products, down 521 carloads, to 9,475; forest products, down 231 carloads, to 8,309; and miscellaneous carloads, down 129 carloads, to 8,489.
