Port of Jacksonville welcomed maiden voyage of Crowley's new LNG-powered containership

May 02, 2025

In mid-April the Jacksonville Port Authority (JAXPORT), a global leader in the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a clean marine fuel, welcomed the maiden voyage of Quetzal, Crowley's newest LNG-powered containership.

With capacity for up to 1,400 20-foot container equivalent units (TEUs), Quetzal provides more cargo capacity than the company's vessels previously used in the Central American and Caribbean trade with the U.S. and is fueled by lower-emission LNG.

Quetzal and its soon coming sister ships were specifically designed to accommodate a variety of container sizes, including 300 refrigerated container unit plugs.

Quetzal initiated service on April 11-12 at Port of Santo Toms, Guatemala. Named to honor Central American culture and communities, the Avance Class vessels, built by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard of Korea, are all expected to enter service in 2025 from owner Eastern Pacific Shipping, operating under long-term charters to Crowley.
