Canadian railways carload traffic volume drops a little in early May

According to the Association of American Railroads (AAR), Canadian railroads reported 94,378 carloads for the week, down 0.3 percent, and 79,891 intermodal units, up 8.6 percent compared with the same week in 2024.

For the first 19 weeks of 2025, Canadian railroads reported cumulative rail traffic volume of 3,077,297 carloads, containers and trailers, up 0.4 percent.

North American rail volume for the week ending May 10, 2025, on 9 reporting U.S., Canadian and Mexican railroads totaled 332,095 carloads, up 4.9 percent compared with the same week last year, and 363,279 intermodal units, up 5.9 percent compared with last year.

Total combined weekly rail traffic in North America was 695,374 carloads and intermodal units, up 5.4 percent. North American rail volume for the first 19 weeks of 2025 was 12,833,256 carloads and intermodal units, up 3.5 percent compared with 2024.
