August was a busy month on all fronts at the Port of New York and New Jersey. Total volume increased by 5.7 percent, reaching 835,845 TEUs (455,904 containers), compared to the 790,891 TEUs (431,782 containers) recorded in August 2024. August 2025 marked the port's second-busiest August ever. The increase brings our year-to-date total through August to 6,047,395 TEUs (3,325,805 containers).
Imports also saw a positive jump in August. A total of 416,009 TEUs (227,975 containers) moved through the Port of New York and New Jersey, a 5.1 percent increase from August 2024's 395,687 TEUs (216,946 containers). From January through August, imported loads reached 3,069,537 TEUs (1,694,332 containers), compared to 2,975,954 TEUs (1,648,153 containers) in the same period of 2024, a 3.1 percent increase.
Exports increased by 9.4 percent in August, totaling 127,552 TEUs (68,493 containers), compared to the 116,628 TEUs (62,771 containers) recorded in August 2024. The port's January through August total for exported loads reached 962,116 TEUs (515,699 containers) in 2025, a 5.5 percent rise from the 912,367 TEUs (489,866 containers) in the same period of 2024.
Auto volume saw a slight uptick in August with a total of 33,512 autos moving through the Port of New York and New Jersey, representing a 0.1 percent increase from August 2024. Auto volume for January through August was 10.6 percent lower than in the same period in 2024.
