The Port of New York and New Jersey maintained its status as the second-busiest U.S. port for loaded TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) both for the month of September and over the first nine months of the year.
Total volume for September dropped slightly to 740,254 TEUs (404,642 containers), a 5 percent decrease from the 779,388 TEUs (426,407 containers) recorded in September 2024. Many shippers imported holiday-related cargo earlier in 2025 in anticipation of tariff policy changes. This number brings the port's total volume over the first nine months of the year to 6,787,649 TEUs (3,730,447 containers).
September imports totaled 363,790 TEUs (199,489 containers), a 4.6 percent decrease from the previous year's 381,440 TEUs (208,882 containers). From January through September, the Port of New York and New Jersey imported 3,433,327 TEUs (1,893,821 containers), a 2.3 percent increase from the 3,357,394 TEUs (1,857,035 containers) imported in the same period of 2024. Import empties were down 30.6 percent from January through September compared to the same period in 2024.
Exports rose 1.8 percent in September, totaling 120,796 TEUs (64,571 containers), up from the 118,632 TEUs (63,714 containers) recorded in September 2024. From January through September, the Port of New York and New Jersey exported 1,082,912 TEUs (580,270 containers), a 5 percent increase when compared to 1,030,999 TEUs (553,580 containers) exported in the same period of 2024. Export empties decreased by 8.3 percent, totaling 254,235 TEUs in September 2025 versus 277,247 TEUs in September 2024. Export empties totaled 2,257,864 TEUs for January through September, up 3.6 percent from the 2,179,043 TEUs in the same period of 2024.
Rail continued its monthly upward trend. The Port of New York and New Jersey moved a total of 59,112 containers by rail in September, a 12.5 percent increase from September 2024. Rail volume from January through September was up 12.3 percent compared to the same period in 2024.
A total of 23,767 autos moved through the Port of New York and New Jersey in September, a 26.7 percent decrease from September 2024. Auto volume for January through September was down 12.3 percent compared to the same period of 2024.
