Statistics Canada reports that aircraft movements at Canada's major and select small airports totalled 504,454 in April 2026, down 3.7% from April 2025. Local movements declined 6.0% year over year, while itinerant movements were down 2.4%.
Domestic itinerant movements dropped 2.8% in April to 278,671. The decrease was driven by reduced flight school activity at certain airports compared with April of the previous year. The biggest decline was at the airport in Oshawa, Ontario (-2,625 movements).
Transborder aircraft movements (to and from the United States) were also down on a year-over-year basis in April, falling 2.6% to 33,374, the 13th consecutive month of decline. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario (-455 movements), Vancouver International, British Columbia (-257) and Montral/Pierre Elliott Trudeau International, Quebec (-193) led the declines.
In contrast, other international movements (outside the United States) were up 4.3% year over year, reaching 18,871 in April. This was the 14th consecutive month of year-over-year growth, albeit the smallest increase since August 2025. Montral/Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Canada's second-busiest airport in terms of other international traffic, posted its first year-over-year decrease since September 2025, decreasing 2.9% (-120 movements) in April 2026.
