U.S. Great Lakes limestone and iron ore trade kept rising in August

The Lake Carriers' Association reports that U.S. shipments of iron ore on the Great Lakes totaled 5.1 million tons in August, a 2 percent increase compared to 2025. Shipments were 5.1 percent below the month's 5-year average.

Year-to-date, the iron ore trade rose 3% to 27.5 million tons but were below their 5-year YTD average by 5.2 percent..

U.S. shipments of limestone on the Great Lakes totaled 3 million tons in August, a 1.7 percent increase from last year. Limestone cargos were below the month's 5-year average by 1.5 percent.

Year-to-date, the U.S. Great Lakes limestone trade stands at 13.1 million tons, a 1.9 percent decrease compared to 2025 and 3.6 percent below the month's 5-year average.
